The Springfield Museum of Art is a major cultural and educational resource serving people throughout Central and Southwest Ohio. Located at 107 Cliff Park Road , close to downtown Springfield in beautiful Cliff Park, the museum is just a few steps from the historic Wittenberg University campus and is easily accessible from any direction.
In 1994, the museum opened its doors to completely renovated and expanded facilities which include seven galleries, ten classrooms, an art library, a gift shop, and a student gallery. A spacious events center with adjoining patio terrace and fully-equipped catering center is available for special occasions.
The museum offers:
- a permanent collection of paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture featuring 19th and 20th century American and European art and works of Ohio artists
- a year round art school offering classes for all ages in a variety of media, e.g., painting, drawing, watercolor, pastels, pottery, sculpture, photography, printmaking, jewelry, glass bead making, airbrush, and calligraphy
These core programs of the museum are supplemented with:
The museum's daily schedule offers flexible daytime and evening hours to gallery visitors, students, and scholars. Administrative staff members are available during normal business hours, special events, and museum exhibitions.
The museum celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1996 culminating a journey of dedication on the part of local art enthusiasts that began in 1946. A permanent facility, built in 1967, provided local residents with art instruction, exhibitions, and a burgeoning collection of permanent works. In 1977 the museum, then called the Springfield Art Center, received an outstanding collection of American and European art works. To better describe its renewed focus on collection, the art center was renamed the Springfield Museum of Art in 1989. Today, the museum is a private, not-for-profit institution supported almost entirely by private sector contributions. It is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
